This midterm exam includes fill-in-the-blank and essay questions based on the following chapters in Books, Media & the internet: Children’s Literature for Today’s Classroom:

1, 3, 4, 6, 13, 15, 16

Instructions:  Fill in the blanks to complete the passages from your textbook. At the end of the passage, add the page number in parentheses.

2.      “Writing proved to be something of a ___________ for some students who struggled to achieve_________ and employ evidence to support their ________.”

3.      “Because the students are not overwhelmed by ________   ________ , they can immerse themselves in the content and _________ on constructing their understandings and interpretations in the medium of their choice, whether it’s the _______ of a __________, a blog, a digital movie or a ________.”

4.      “The maligning of ________ films, of what we called ___________   ___________   icons, seems a waste of time; for millions of children and adults, the film is the tale.”

5.     “________ programs, for some time now, have linked to ________ that provide embellishments and _________ materials from the story world.”

6.    “Students’ _______ and ___________ processes require more than determining which __________ to use and how to put them together in a ____________ way, and our assessment must acknowledge the _____________ decision making involved.”

7.      “At the same time, we must ensure that our _______ have ________ opportunity to explore the world of new _________.”

8.    “Students can use ________      ___________ to read both the print and the illustrations.”

9.     “Using _____   ______   __________  software along with the LCD projector, you can _________ other text or images with the originals in the _______ book.”

10 “Offering students the ____________ to direct and discuss forms of _______-____________ --- visually and through written language --- increases their sense of themselves as active producers of their _________     _________   rather than just passive consumers or readers of _______.”

11 “_________________ clearly provide greater opportunities to increase _____________ for the children lucky enough to be in the program.”

12“These ______ - _______ leads encouraged them to speculate and share.”

Essay Questions:
Use the chapters listed above to answer the following essay questions to the best of your ability.  You will need to quote at least 3 passages from the readings (with page numbers in MLA format) in each response.  Your responses should be at least 3 pages long.

1.      Children’s picture books are a staple in the early stages of reading.  Many children continue to read these books into their early teen years.  As technology continues to take a bigger role in children’s lives both at home and in the classroom, how can picture books keep up with today’s trends?

2.      Using what you’ve learned from at least 3 different chapters of the book, explain Hybridity in children’s books to the best of your ability.

Website:   http://pbskids.com/

PBS Kids is a fun and informative site that has games, stories, and clips from the popular PBS children's TV shows. This site can be used in the classroom by showing students the stories available on our classroom projection screen, where the words are big enough for everyone to read along.  Also, kids can be rewarded for a job well done by playing games on this educational site using the classroom computer.  I think the main goal of PBS Kids is to show kids that reading and learning are fun.
